Just back from...

Malta

Don’t be fooled by its size — Malta is one of the Mediterranean’s most layered destinations, boasting ancient cities, Michelin-starred dining, and more sunshine than you can shake a sunhat at. Small in scale, yet brimming with personality.

Our luxury travel associate David Knight has just returned from a short but immersive familiarisation trip to this cultural gem, hosted by Kirker Holidays, KM Malta Airlines, and the Malta Tourist Board. Based at the timeless Corinthia Palace Hotel, he’s brought back plenty of inspiration for your next Maltese escape.

Touchdown &

first impressions

Landing into Malta feels like stepping into a sun-baked history book. The soft golden tones of limestone buildings, the winding roads lined with bougainvillaea, the glimmer of the sea always not far off – it’s Mediterranean, but with its own rhythm and richness.

After a warm welcome, my first stop was the hotel spa – specifically, a 30-minute massage that turned out to be the ideal antidote to post-flight fatigue. The Athenaeum Spa is calm, minimal, and beautifully done – and it immediately set the tone for the rest of the stay: understated luxury, a little old-world, and deeply relaxing.

Checking in:

Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa

Our base for the trip was the elegant Corinthia Palace, a refined hideaway nestled right in the centre of the island. Set in a quiet, traditional residential district opposite the President’s San Anton Palace, it’s a world away from the bustle of much of the island – but you’re still within easy reach of everywhere.

The Palace Suite I checked into was spacious and calming, with high ceilings, clean lines, and warm Mediterranean hues. Everything about the hotel speaks to a slower pace – from the manicured gardens to the gentle clink of cutlery at breakfast on the terrace. It’s also incredibly well connected. A complimentary hotel shuttle runs daily into Valletta (just book it the day before), and taxis are easy to arrange. Malta is small – no journey is more than half an hour – which makes it a breeze to explore, even over a long weekend.

And then there’s the food. The hotel’s culinary offering is quietly impressive. Villa Corinthia, set in the original 19th-century villa, serves beautifully plated Italian classics in a traditional setting. Josephine’s Café brings a fresh, vegan twist to poolside bites. But the crown jewel is Bahia – a Michelin-starred restaurant tucked upstairs in a light-filled, contemporary space with round white tables and living greenery. The tasting menus are inspired by Malta’s villages and bring together local produce, inventive technique, and a real sense of story. There’s a fully vegan tasting menu, too – a thoughtful touch that really stood out.

Exploring the

island

Our first full day began with a deep dive into Valletta, Malta’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s limestone buildings glow warmly in the Mediterranean sun, their baroque details telling stories of centuries past. Rather than a typical museum, Valletta feels like a lived-in tapestry — a blend of historic streets bustling with locals, quiet courtyards, and unexpected pockets of calm.

As evening fell, we made our way to Mdina, the old fortified city known locally as the “Silent City.” Its narrow, lamp-lit lanes felt almost suspended in time, creating a rare kind of stillness. Dinner at AD 1530 Restaurant, tucked into the courtyard of The Xara Palace, was a standout — authentic Maltese flavours presented with subtle creativity, served in an intimate setting that perfectly matched the city’s quiet charm.

The following morning, we slipped onto a traditional Dghajsa boat for a slow, peaceful cruise through Valletta’s Grand Harbour. From the water, the city’s imposing fortifications took on a different dimension — rugged yet refined, a reminder of Malta’s strategic importance through the ages. Later, we visited the iconic Phoenicia Hotel, where lunch was a relaxed affair amid lush gardens and elegant interiors. Nearby, the charming Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux offered another glimpse of Maltese refinement. We rounded off the day with a trip to Marsaxlokk, a fishing village famous for its colourful boats and fresh seafood.

What struck me most is how widely Malta can appeal. Couples looking for a romantic long weekend, solo travellers after easy cultural exploration, even foodies wanting something a little different – Malta delivers on all fronts. It’s compact, safe, friendly, and full of depth. If you’re not booking a rental car and would prefer to check out public transport, the option is largely buses, and Malta does them surprisingly well.

So why

Malta?

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was a private tour of Casa Rocca Piccola, a 16th-century family home still inhabited by the de Piro family. Walking through its rooms felt like stepping into a lived-in archive — antiques, heirlooms, and artworks quietly telling stories of four centuries. Marquis Nicholas de Piro guided us personally, sharing candid stories about Maltese history and his family’s role in it. It wasn’t a typical museum visit; it was a rare, personal glimpse behind the scenes of Malta’s aristocratic past.

Malta has all the makings of a standout short-haul destination: year-round sun, stunning architecture, and a cultural heritage that spans millennia. Yet it still manages to feel undiscovered.

The Corinthia Palace is a perfect base for discerning travellers. Quietly luxurious, steeped in character, and perfectly placed to explore the island at your own pace. Whether you’re strolling through the President’s Gardens across the road, tasting your way through a Michelin menu, or soaking up the slow, timeless beauty of Valletta, this is a stay that leaves a lasting impression.

And if you’d prefer to stay closer to the coast? Corinthia also has a sister property overlooking St George’s Bay – a popular choice for travellers seeking a livelier, beachside setting. This is the area you’ll want to stay for fabulous nightlife. At Swords Travel, we’ll help you experience the very best of Malta – from private tours of noble homes to sea-view suites and curated dining experiences.
