Our luxury travel associate Francesca has just returned from exploring some of Greece’s most stunning Grecotel properties, from the historic charm of Athens to the serene shores of Corfu. Here’s what stood out to her…
It wasn’t my first time in Greece, but this whirlwind trip was easily one of my favourites. Over just a few days, I hopped between Cape Sounio, The Dolli at Acropolis, and Corfu Imperial—three Grecotel hotels that each offered something completely different but equally special. I’ve always loved Greece for its mix of ancient history, relaxed island life, and ridiculously good food; but this trip gave me a whole new perspective.
If you’re not familiar with Grecotel, they’re one of Greece’s leading luxury hotel brands with 40 properties dotted across the mainland and islands. What easily makes them stand out is how they blend local heritage, high-end service, and stunning locations; whether it’s a grand seaside resort or a boutique city stay. Each hotel feels authentically Greek but in its own unique way—some more traditional, others ultra-modern—but always with incredible hospitality at the heart of it.
From waking up to views of the Temple of Poseidon, to eating the freshest seafood right by the water in Corfu, and sipping a cocktail overlooking the Acropolis at The Dolli, I was treated to new highlights every day. And, while I’ve done my fair share of Greek island hopping, this time it felt like I was discovering an entirely new side of the country thanks to Grecotel’s epic hospitality.
The first leg of my trip took me to Grecotel Cape Sounio, a hidden Riviera escape about 45 minutes from the centre of Athens. Tucked between pine-covered hills and the Aegean Sea, this place has a quiet magic to it—especially with the Temple of Poseidon watching over you. Whether you’re floating in the pool or settling in for dinner, the temple is forever in sight, glowing in the evening light like something out of a postcard.
I stayed in a Dream Villa, complete with a private plunge pool and plenty of space to unwind. It’s the kind of place where you can do as little or as much as you like. If you’re up for exploring, the walk up to the temple is well worth it—the views from the top, especially at sunset, are unreal. The hotel itself blends seamlessly into the landscape, and some areas are even protected due to their historical significance, which only adds to the charm.
Of the six restaurants and bars on offer, the resort’s signature eatery, led by award-winning chef Sakis Tzanetos, is one to book. Overlooking the illuminated temple, it makes for an incredible dining experience. If you love history but prefer a more laid-back setting than the city, Cape Sounio is the perfect alternative to staying in Athens.
The next stop was right in the heart of Athens—The Dolli at Acropolis. Set in a beautifully restored neoclassical building in Plaka, it’s surrounded by pastel-coloured townhouses, independent boutiques, and quintessential cafés where you can sip a strong Greek coffee and watch the world go by—a morning ritual I could get very used to.
One of the things I love about Athens is how effortlessly it blends ancient history with a buzzing modern energy. Staying at The Dolli meant I was just a short walk from the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the lively Monastiraki Flea Market. If you’re into art and culture, I highly recommend making time for the National Archaeological Museum, or a wander through Psiri; where the contemporary art galleries and street art give the city a totally different feel.
As for the hotel itself, The Dolli is an elegant mix of old and new—high ceilings, contemporary design, and a refined, intimate atmosphere that makes it feel like a hidden gem (I couldn’t help but feel a little bougie too). But the real highlight for me? The rooftop restaurant. Sitting up there with a long lunch, soaking up the skyline, was one of those pinch-me moments. It’s easily one of the best spots in Athens to take in the Acropolis, and the menu matches the setting—elevated Mediterranean dishes, fresh seafood, and light, elegant plates that make you want to stay for hours. Athens can be full-on at times, but The Dolli is the perfect retreat.
After Athens, it was time for a change of pace. A quick flight took me over to the beautiful island of Corfu, and from the airport, it was just a 20-minute drive to the Peninsula Kommeno and Grecotel Corfu Imperial. The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle into Corfu Town, which made exploring super easy—not that I was in any rush to leave. Set on its own private peninsula, the views here were unreal, with the Ionian stretching out in every direction.
Corfu itself has such a unique character; you can really feel its mix of Venetian, French, and British influences, especially in the Old Town. Think grand mansions, narrow cobbled streets, and elegant arcades. But back at the hotel, it was all about that classic Greek island feel—whitewashed walls, blue accents, and lush greenery everywhere. I stayed in a Cruise Guest Room, which had the kind of sea views you just don’t get tired of (and a seriously impressive mini-bar).
One of the best ways to experience Corfu is by boat, and hiring one straight from the hotel made for an unforgettable afternoon—cruising along the coast, stopping off for a swim in quiet little coves, and soaking up the scenery. For something a little different, there’s a quirky golfing experience where you hit biodegradable fish food balls into the sea (pictured below). It wasn’t something I had anticipated doing on this trip, but it seriously satisfying. The resort, like many of Grecotel’s properties, goes above and beyond for children too—their ‘Grecoland’ kids club is so much fun for children of all ages, and you can even book a private cinema under the stars.
Food-wise, the hotel has some great options, and I personally adored Yali Seafood—fresh fish, right by the water, with that perfect ‘I could sit here all day’ atmosphere. Merlins had a more unexpected mix of Latin American and Asian flavours, while Danilia Village was all about the traditional Greek experience—plate smashing, dancing, and a lot of fun.
Reflecting on this trip, I’m reminded of just how unique each of these Grecotel properties are. They manage to create something truly special—each one feels deeply connected to its surroundings while offering an elevated level of comfort and service that makes you feel like you’re experiencing Greece in a way that’s truly personal. From the peaceful retreat of Cape Sounio to the boutique charm of The Dolli and the laid-back luxury of Corfu Imperial, it’s clear that Grecotel knows how to blend tradition with modern-day luxury.
A big thank you to Grecotel for this incredible journey! If you’re looking to book your own unforgettable escape, get in touch with Swords Travel—we’re here to tailor the perfect trip for you, whether it’s history, culture, or simply relaxing with a view that takes your breath away.
