As part of an immersive experience hosted after the Australian Tourism Exchange in Brisbane, our founder Mark Swords was invited to explore the breathtaking Silky Oaks Lodge—one of the most iconic Luxury Lodges of Australia.
Set deep within Queensland’s ancient rainforest, this journey offered a rare glimpse into Indigenous culture, barefoot luxury, and the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
Below, Mark shares his highlights from this unforgettable stay and why Silky Oaks deserves a spot on every luxury Australia itinerary.
After a whirlwind few days in Brisbane for the Australian Tourism Exchange—where hundreds of the country’s top travel professionals gather to share what’s new and next—it was time to head north. And I mean properly north. I swapped the city buzz for the lush green stillness of the Daintree Rainforest, where I checked into the extraordinary Silky Oaks Lodge, one of the Luxury Lodges of Australia and an essential stop on any Northern Queensland itinerary.
Now, I’ve been lucky enough to visit ten of Australia’s luxury lodges over the years, and Silky Oaks genuinely holds its own among them. Perched above the Mossman River, and tucked into ancient rainforest, it’s just 20 minutes from Port Douglas but feels like another world entirely. The lodge strikes that perfect balance—elegant, intimate, and unashamedly luxurious, without ever feeling pretentious. It’s the kind of place where you arrive stressed and leave lighter.
I visited in May, Queensland’s winter, and honestly? It’s the best time to go. The temperatures are warm but comfortable, the skies are clear, and—crucially—it’s not humid. The wet season in summer can be a little full-on for most, so plan for the dry if you can.
From the moment I arrived and was welcomed with a glass of chilled Tasmanian sparkling by lodge manager Ben, I knew I was in good hands. After a busy few days at the conference, I could feel my shoulders drop instantly. That’s the magic of Silky Oaks—the rainforest doesn’t just surround you, it soothes you.
My Treehouse Retreat was exactly that—private, spacious, and surrounded by greenery, with an outdoor bath on the balcony and a hammock that practically begged for a post-lunch nap. It’s impossible not to slow down here. There’s no rush, no schedule. Just time. And birdsong.
I had the chance to view several other room types during my stay, and each offers something special. The Daintree Pavilion, their top-tier suite, is a true showstopper—two bedrooms, two open-air bathrooms, and a central lounge area that flows into a large deck with a private plunge pool. It’s ideal for families or couples travelling together who want privacy without compromising on space or style.
The Rainforest Retreats are slightly more compact but still beautifully designed, with open-plan living, deep soaking tubs, and those signature views into the canopy. Meanwhile, the Billabong Suites overlook the Mossman River and offer that gentle soundtrack of running water—perfect for honeymooners or anyone wanting a serene escape.
Each room category shares the same design philosophy: luxurious but natural, with timber finishes, calming neutral tones, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Whether you’re here for wellness, adventure, or simply to unwind, you’ll find a space that feels like yours.
Meals are taken in the main open-air restaurant, which feels like dining in a very elegant treehouse. The food is sensational—locally inspired, beautifully presented—and breakfast and dinner (plus drinks) are all included. It’s worth noting lunch isn’t, but that’s intentional. Most guests are out exploring during the day—and so were we.
Our first full day was spent with a local Indigenous guide, and it ended up being one of the most humbling, memorable travel experiences I’ve ever had. We learned about First Nations culture, history, traditional hunting methods—and yes, we went mud crabbing through the mangroves. Wading through the wetlands, catching our own seafood for lunch… it was real, raw, and unforgettable. You can’t help but feel a deep connection to the land and the stories it holds.
Day two was all about the reef. We chartered a luxury yacht with one of our preferred local partners—true reef specialists who focus on smaller, more curated experiences. With just a handful of fellow guests, we spent the day exploring two pristine snorkelling sites on the Great Barrier Reef. The clarity, the colour, the sheer abundance of marine life—it’s everything the reef should be, without the crowds.
And while those two days were certainly the highlights, there’s no shortage of adventures on offer here. Guided rainforest walks through the Daintree are available directly from the lodge, with expert naturalists helping you spot native wildlife and understand the rainforest’s incredible biodiversity. For something slower-paced, you can take a kayak or paddleboard down the Mossman River—it’s peaceful, scenic, and often accompanied by the sounds of tropical birds in the canopy above.
Back at the lodge, you can unwind with a spa treatment at the Healing Waters Spa, inspired by ancient Aboriginal traditions and using locally sourced botanicals. There’s also a riverside swimming hole just a short walk from the main lodge—perfect for a refreshing dip between activities. For the more adventurous, the lodge team can arrange canyoning, waterfall hikes, or full-day trips into Cape Tribulation and the deeper reaches of the Daintree.
Silky Oaks is a true gem. Whether you’re combining it with Lizard Island, Mount Mulligan Lodge, or even a trip to Uluru (check out Longitude 131°), it works beautifully as part of a broader Australian adventure. Cairns is just a 90-minute drive, so logistics are easy, and from there you’ve got access to the very best of Queensland and beyond.
What surprised me most? Just how diverse this part of Australia is. Rainforest in the morning, reef by lunch, and dinner on the beach. It’s wild, in the best way. And it really is for everyone—couples, honeymooners, families, solo travellers, foodies, wellness lovers, and anyone looking for that real “reset” kind of travel.
If you’re planning a trip down under and want to do it properly—with meaning, depth, and just the right amount of barefoot luxury—this is it.
