From golden savannahs to snow-dusted mountains and wild coastline, Kenya is a country that captivates you long before you arrive. It’s the land of the Big Five, of sweeping game drives and red-cloaked Maasai warriors. A place where the rhythm of the bush replaces the noise of daily life — and where the wildlife feels just as much a part of the landscape as the acacia trees that dot it.
Kenya is best known for the legendary Masai Mara, home to some of the most rewarding safari experiences on the planet — not to mention the epic Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest and zebra thunder across the plains between July and October. But there’s so much more: from pioneering conservation work in private reserves like Ol Pejeta Conservancy, to magical sundowners, starlit skies, and moments of soul-stilling silence you’ll remember forever.
We were invited on a FAM trip with our trusted partners Abercrombie & Kent, one of the world’s leading names in tailor-made safari travel. Representing Swords, our luxury travel associate Dani spent four unforgettable nights exploring two of A&K’s standout properties — Sanctuary Olonana in the Masai Mara, and Sanctuary Tambarare in Ol Pejeta. What followed was a journey filled with extraordinary wildlife, spectacular accommodation, and moments so vivid they’re almost impossible to put into words — but she’s going to try. Here’s what she loved, learned, and will never forget…
We began the journey with a four-hour drive from Nairobi to Sanctuary Tambarare, set in the heart of Ol Pejeta Conservancy — a 90,000-acre haven for wildlife and one of Kenya’s most respected conservation projects. The final hour of the drive takes you through the conservancy itself, and the safari starts early. Before I’d even reached camp, I’d already spotted zebra, giraffe and elephants. A pretty magical welcome.
Tambarare is home to just 10 luxury tents and one private villa, all tucked into the landscape and offering gorgeous views. I stayed in one of the tents — though “tent” doesn’t quite do it justice. Think: king-size bed (with an electric blanket!), a double sink vanity, walk-in shower, separate toilet, and thoughtful little touches everywhere. There’s turndown service, bug spray, netting, and a private veranda where I sat with a cup of coffee and just watched the wild roll past.
The camp restaurant overlooks a watering hole — and one morning, during breakfast, a family of elephants came to drink. It was a proper pinch me moment. The food is superb, much of it grown onsite, and evenings are spent around the firepit with drinks and torches lighting the water where buffalo gather. Tambarare is more than just a place to stay — it’s part of something important. Guests are invited to plant a tree at the end of their visit, which felt like a lovely way to leave something behind. And the activities here are phenomenal: walking safaris, day and night drives, lion tracking, a visit to meet the K9 unit, and perhaps most poignantly, the chance to see the last two remaining Northern White Rhinos in the world.
Our final evening here ended with a sundowner set up in the wild — a full bar waiting for us, a glowing sky, and a line of zebras wandering across the horizon. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
From Tambarare, I flew 50 minutes to the Masai Mara and arrived at Sanctuary Olonana, where the luxury steps up even further. Set on a private stretch of the Mara River, the lodge is surrounded by hippos — their gentle grunting becomes the background music to your stay. It’s oddly comforting and incredibly atmospheric.
I stayed in one of the 15 glass-sided suites, and I can honestly say it was the most impressive room I’ve ever experienced. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows open the space to the river and trees beyond, and inside there’s a king-size bed, deep freestanding bath, rainfall shower, and a lounge area that feels like your own private safari salon. There’s also a large deck with a double daybed — the perfect spot to unwind between game drives.
The lodge also has a pool, a small gym, in-room spa treatments, a lovely open-air bar, and truly divine food. Think fine dining with the heart of the bush still intact — fresh, local, and beautifully presented.
The game drives here are exceptional. We didn’t have to travel far to see elephants, lions, giraffes, and even the tiniest baby cheetahs. If you want variety and a high chance of seeing the Big Five (plus plenty of babies), this is the place. We also had the chance to do a walking safari, which is such a different way to engage with the bush — quieter, slower, and totally immersive. If you’re up for something extra special, hot air balloon rides can also be arranged for a bird’s eye view of the Mara at sunrise.
I didn’t visit during migration season, which usually runs from July to October, but honestly — it was perfect. We had peaceful sightings with very few other vehicles around, which made every moment feel even more magical.
Kenya has a way of staying with you. It’s not just the animals or the scenery (although those are extraordinary) — it’s the feeling. Of being small in the best way. Of connecting with the natural world in a way you didn’t realise you needed. Of slowing down.
Sanctuary Tambarare and Sanctuary Olonana are both standout lodges in very different landscapes — ideal for combining into one seamless safari. You’ll get the pioneering conservation energy of Ol Pejeta and the cinematic drama of the Masai Mara, with five-star comfort at every turn. A heartfelt thank you to Abercrombie & Kent for hosting us on such a memorable trip — your expert planning and passion for Kenya made every detail shine.
Thinking about your first (or next) safari? Let’s talk. We’ll help you build a Kenya itinerary that’s personal, powerful, and completely unforgettable.
