On our most recent trip to Australia we decided to do a stopover in Singapore, mainly to break up the journey but also I’d heard so much about the city I wanted to check out what Singapore had to offer. We flew direct with BA on the A380 in their club world cabin which still operates on the old style business class configuration but the flight was great from a timing perspective and helped reduce Jet Lag.
Tip: if travelling on the old aircraft ask me about the best seats as some of the seats you don’t have to step over anyone to exit.
On this trip we stayed in the Orchard road area of Singapore which is really great for a first timer, lots of shops, restaurants and easy access to all the main sights. We stayed on one of Singapores newest additions the Como Metropolitan. I’ve long been a fan of Como having stayed at their hotels in the Maldives, Italy and Australia. Instantly on arrival the como signature scent hits you as you enter the very modern property. Downstairs in the main entrance there is a Cédric Grolet patisserie with the most incredible pastries (you get to try these at breakfast).
We booked an Emerald room located on the higher floors, the room was a great size and so well equipped, very cleverly designed and someone that stays in hotels lots has clearly thought about logistics. The hotel has a great rooftop pool and bar, and also one of the best fitness rooms I’ve experienced in a city hotel. Breakfast was a real treat at this hotel with so much variety, with a good choice of healthy or indulgent options. Another cool perk is Bruno the robot barista which is complimentary in the lobby area – worth trying just to see a robot make coffee.
Singapore is such an easy city to get around, we stayed for 3 nights and I think we only really touched the surface. On day one we opted for the open top bus just for ease to explore and see which areas we wanted to see, however the metro and taxis are also very reasonable. The areas we visited included marina bay, gardens by the bay, Haji lane, China town, and then of course one of the infamous hawker markets (huge food markets with lots of different cuisines). In addition to the city there is also Sentosa island which is more resort style and home to the stunning Capella which we visited, and also Universal stuidos amongst other attractions.
What I really liked about Singapore was that it was incredibly clean, safe and I felt comfortable exploring the city. I also loved the fact you could do a city and a resort based holiday in one. I think all the areas we visited above are must do’s but if I was to come again I’d possibly extend my stay to 4/5 nights. Singapore is great for everyone, couples, families and people looking to relax or explore. During your stay head down to Lau Pasat (one of the hawker markets) for a local Satay experience to really immerse yourself in the destination.
