Southern Ocean Lodge

Perched dramatically on the clifftops of Kangaroo Island’s wild southern coast, Southern Ocean Lodge is one of Australia’s most iconic stays — reimagined, rebuilt, and more remarkable than ever. This is the kind of place where luxury doesn’t compete with the landscape, it flows with it: curved, low-slung architecture that disappears into the dunes, floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the crashing sea, and interiors that draw directly from the island’s raw, elemental beauty.

Everything here is shaped by the surroundings. Walks along the limestone cliffs, wildlife encounters with sea lions and kangaroos, and dinners celebrating local seafood and native ingredients are all included as part of your stay. Inside the lodge, the experience is seamless — think fine dining with sweeping ocean views, a light-filled Great Room for relaxing, and a wellness spa that taps into the rhythm of the island.

Southern Ocean Lodge is best suited to couples and adults looking for space, solitude, and a connection to nature — without sacrificing the creature comforts. It’s also a perfect pairing with time in the Barossa or a longer journey through South Australia’s wine and wilderness regions.

Location

Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island

Southern Ocean Lodge is located on the remote southwest coast of Kangaroo Island, just over a 30-minute drive from Kingscote Airport. Regular flights connect via Adelaide, making this wild stretch of coastline surprisingly accessible. Despite its remoteness, everything is taken care of the moment you land — airport transfers, gourmet meals, daily experiences, and intuitive service are all part of the package. The lodge sits above Hanson Bay, with direct access to rugged walking trails, hidden beaches, and some of the best wildlife encounters in Australia.

Your

accommodation

Southern Ocean Lodge features just 25 ocean-facing suites, each one designed to feel like a seamless extension of the landscape. Interiors are warm, tactile and pared-back, with sunken lounges, hand-finished timber, stone bathrooms, and panoramic windows that bring the Southern Ocean right into the room.

The entry-level Flinders Suites are generous and beautifully appointed, while the newer Ocean Retreats and Ocean Pavilion take it a step further with private plunge pools and outdoor firepits — perfect for watching the sun dip behind the cliffs with a glass of local wine in hand. For something truly indulgent, the Ocean Pavilion offers two bedrooms, expansive indoor-outdoor living, and uninterrupted clifftop views — ideal for couples travelling together or a special celebration.

Whether you’re tucked up by the fire or soaking in a tub with the sea beyond, every room is designed to make you feel connected to the coast, without giving up a single comfort.
