When it comes to river cruises, there’s a lot of choice. So how do you know which is the right river cruise for you? There are big differences when it comes to the quality of food, drinks, excursions, cabins and facilities. There are also differences in the amount of choice you get. Some cruise lines may only have one restaurant onboard, others have several. Some cruise lines include limited excursions, whereas others include multiple choices per day.
So decide what’s most important to you and how much you’re willing to pay and prioritise them.
Scenic is one of the more expensive river cruise lines, but when you look at what they include and the quality of everything on offer, they represent great value. If you are looking for top quality across the board and a high level of inclusions and experiences then Scenic will tick a lot of boxes for you.
They are also the top rated river cruise line by Which? in their independent survey.
Onboard Scenic you will have at least 4 dining options (5 for top level suites), which is a lot for a ship of their size.
The main restaurant offers a gourmet buffet for breakfast and lunch and a la carte for dinner. The food on offer uses fresh local ingredients and reflects the destination you are in. For example in Vienna they served Wiener Schnitzel.
River Café serves lighter meals in the morning and afternoon, so it’s great if you’re not wanting a full lunch or just fancy a snack at any point in the day.
Portobello is an Italian restaurant which all guests receive an invite for once per week. This is an incredible dining experience with a 5 courses featuring regional specialties paired with local wines.
Table La Rive is a chefs table dining experience where guests are treated to a six-course dégustation menu with sommelier paired wines. This is an experience exclusive to Royal and Junior suite guests on cruises of 7 nights or less and for all Diamond deck guests on cruises of 10 nights or longer. This is an experience that many other ships charge a hefty supplement for, but Scenic include.
The final dining option is in-suite dining, which again is included.
The drinks are all-inclusive and include premium brands, fine wines and cocktails. The mini bars in the suites are also included and fully stocked each day.
Scenic include excursions in every destination and offer personalised activities with Scenic Freechoice.
As well as the excursions on offer, guests can also choose to independently explore the destinations by e-bike or by foot using the Scenic Tailormade App.
Once per week they also offer an exclusive Scenic Enrich experience. These are true wow factor experiences that will undoubtedly be a highlight of your trip. In Vienna the Scenic Enrich experience is an incredible evening show at Palais Liechtenstein. The classical show with ballroom dancing is completely private to Scenic guests so feels really special!
The quality of the excursions included with Scenic is very high. These are not just basic guided city tours, they are experiences truly designed to ensure guests get to see the best of every destination.
Scenic Jasper was built in 2016 and refurbished in 2019 and is part of Scenic’s latest generation of Space-Ships. Onboard you’ll find a rooftop heated pool, a fitness and wellness area and an exclusive Salt Therapy Lounge.
Everywhere on the ship has been designed to allow you to view the scenery floating past in the best possible way, with floor to ceiling picture windows inside and 360-degrees from the Sun Deck and Riverview Terrace. There’s even a walking/running track all around the Sun-Deck, allowing you to take in the incredible views whilst exercising.
Scenic Jasper carries a maximum of 163 passengers which is very low for a ship of this size. This combined with a 1:3 crew to guest ratio means that the service onboard is exceptional.
Scenic river cruises are all-suite ships. With the exception of the standard suites on the lower deck, all suites have balconies and picture windows. If your budget permits, I would highly recommend opting for a balcony suite of higher as these suites really allow you to enjoy the views passing by.
I loved the balconies onboard Scenic as they are glass and can be either open or closed making them great all year round. To open them there’s a button inside the cabin which lowers the top window down leaving just the glass balcony at the bottom. I haven’t seen this on any other river cruise ships.
All suites come with butler service and they feel very spacious.
There’s live music in the lounge area every evening.
Not really. There’s isn’t anything onboard to entertain children and the suites aren’t set up to accommodate families. If you had older children and were looking for a multi-generational holiday then absolutely it could work. It’s a great way to experience many destinations on one holiday and older children would definitely enjoy many of the excursions.
“Upgrade to a Royal or Junior Suite cabin to benefit from 5 dining options onboard“
