Most people on their first trips to Australia tend to explore the well known itineraries such as city, rock and reef. However as this was my 4th time in Australia I really wanted to get to the core of the outback experience and explore the Western and Northern Territory, which have always been on my list of “must dos”. I think the key when planning trip to Australia is to speak to an expert who will ask you questions to craft the right trip for you. Depending on your interests it’s so important to spend some time discussing these ideas in advance to ensure you get a the most out of your experience.
The only time you can visit the Kimberley area is during the Australia winter in the dry season which tends to be mid April through to September. During the summer months (the wet season) the ground lodges go into hibernation.
On this trip we flew from Perth to Kununarra in the northeast of WA, and started our journey at the renowned El Questro Homestead (part of luxury lodges of Australia). As we arrived late in the day we got to the lodge just as the sun was setting in time some canapés and pre dinner drinks. The Homestead is a fully inclusive experience including all food, drinks, and pretty much all your activities, except for a few upgraded options, which to be honest I don’t think you would need as there is plenty to keep you occupied.
On our first day at El Questro we were lucky enough to have a talk from a local aboriginal family who talked about the history and their elders experiences, and the history of aboriginal culture. We also got to experience the healing ceremony performed by a local aboriginal person which was a really interesting experience and a this was the first time I’d experienced anything like this in Australia so it gave me a deeper understating of the background of the First Nations and their values.
We then headed out for a morning river cruise, followed by an afternoon at the Kadadeeje falls where we bathed in the waters which were surprisingly warm at 28-30 degrees. It feels so great just to be at nature and enjoy and learn so much about this amazing country.
After a bust day exploring we head back to the homestead and experience some of the very tasty gastronomy that the Homestead had to offer with very much locally sourced ingredients and wines from the WA region. The food was top notch with a very nice selection of wines paired with the meals.
During my visit I stayed in the cliffs side lodges, which is such a great option with wonderful views, a true outback experience feel, and even a bath tub to soak in and enjoy the surroundings. There is also the chamberlain suite which is great for anyone wishing to have the best views; more space and a true luxury experience at El Questro Homestead.
After a good nights sleep it was an early start for our private charter flight with aviair from El Questro airstrip to head out to the infamous bungle bungle range. These incredible mountain ranges are in the heart of the Purnululu national park and were formed over 360 million years ago. This experience really gets you into the heart of the Kimberly. The opening of this national park surprisingly only dates back to the 1980’s but is high on most people’s list to visit whilst touring Australia. In this area we use one of the best guide experiences to take you out into the gorges and really immerse yourself within the bungle bungles. Some of the activities can be more challenging than others so it’s important to discuss your level of fitness prior to joining some of the excursions. The other great additional option to consider is a helicopter ride so you can really get up close to the range and see it from a completely different view, these can be done for anything from 15 mins right up to one hour.
After a full day of touring the bungles we relaxed for sundowners overlooking the magnificent views of the area with some platters and drinks.
With this area you can experience it as a day tour or choose to overnight in one of the local lodge / tented camps. There are only two to choose from and we stayed at the Bungle Bungle Wilderness lodge which is focussed on glamping style tents, which had all the luxuries you would need for a one night stay.
After our night in the bungles we then head d back to the airstrip on to our next part of the trip flying from the Bungles over to Bullo River station in the Northern Territory…

I’ve always loved exploring Australia but this time I felt I got such an authentic experience and felt completely in the outback. The personal highlight for me on this trip was visiting the Bungles, such an extraordinary experience and a memory I’ll have forever.
