An important introduction to the Swords Travel year, the ‘Above and Beyond’ Awards are now being presented to a selection of Affiliates and Associates – with a prize of a Long Haul Fam Trip!
The first of these was to Singapore and Koh Samui in October 2024 and I was fortunate to be included on this. The trip started with 2 nights in the CBD of Singapore, around the Marina Bay area, followed by 3 nights in Koh Samui and finished with the final night spent on Sentosa Island back in Singapore.
Sentosa Island is often overlooked in favour of Orchard Road and Marina Bay but a short stay here really enlightened me as to why this is definitely a spot to consider. Hotels on Sentosa offer more space than in the city centre, with the Capella being one of the most deluxe and Shangri-La giving another good 5* option at the end of the island. It definitely appeals most to families as the island has developed into a more adventurous activity centre – attractions include Universal Studios, a waterpark, a dinosaur theme park and go-karting. Having said that, it is minutes away from a huge mall – Vivo City – with hundreds of international high-street brands, and extremely easy to access the rest of the city too. Staying on Sentosa by no means puts you out on a limb, it simply gives you more personal space!
Arguably “saving the best to last”, we were honoured to be invited guests at Capella Singapore located close to the entrance to Sentosa Island. Having very recently being awarded the 35th place within the Top 50 Hotels in the World, I can honestly vouch for the accolade being well deserved. It is an oasis within an urban destination, with the original buildings dating back to the 1880s when it was built as the home and base for British colonial officers until the 1960s. Today, however, Capella’s development of the contrasting contemporary buildings that wrap around the colonial centre make for a very funky but stylish and obviously luxurious hotel. We were in the newer building and the rooms were beautiful – expanses of glass, a balcony on each room, open-plan bathroom designs and generous sizes. The Italian restaurant is warm and welcoming with a family-dining style, while the Cantonese (only a matter of time until a Michelin star adorns the entrance way, I’m sure) is fine dining at is very finest. Bob’s Bar meanwhile forms the heart of the property and always has a buzz to enjoy and the new Pineapple Room and the Lounge indoor have more of a nod back to the times as a Mess Bar!
The opening category of rooms – Premier – are the largest footprint in Singapore and the Garden Villas are a perfect space for families of up to 5 wanting separate sleeping spaces with a plunge pool thrown in.
The service here is gracious and subtle but they are always there to tend to any needs. It is one of those lovely balances reached between spotting the guests’ needs but leaving them to feel at peace. It is a hard service style to achieve but Capella does.
The highlights of the hotel? Without a doubt – 1) Along the side of the pool seating the complimentary Aesop sun lotion and stylish sun hats 2) A VIP amenity of Frette linen pillowcases embroidered with the guest’s initials 3) Afternoon Tea in the lounge and poolside smoothies included for all guests – everyone is club floor here! 4) Complimentary minibar stocked daily and 3 items pressed for free too. Basically whatever can make you feel looked after, comfortable and worry-free.
Universal was minutes away by hotel shuttle and it is an ideal spot to spend a day with the family.
Top tip: Purchase the Express Pass – worth its weight in gold as it ensures you’ll get through every single ride and maximise every minute in the park.
From here the monorail is free to Vivo City for shopping and dining, and then the hotel have a half-hourly shuttle back.
