If Sri Lanka isn’t on your radar yet, it should be — and at Swords Travel, we’ve long known it’s a destination that delivers far more than just pretty beaches (though those are exceptional, too). Think sacred temples, scenic train rides, rolling tea plantations, ancient ruins, and national parks teeming with elephants — all wrapped up in warm hospitality and wildly good food. It’s the kind of place that suits a lot of different travellers: wellness seekers, culture lovers, coast-chasers, and honeymooners looking for somewhere with a bit of soul.
Our Luxury Travel Associate, Leanne, recently returned from a tailor-made journey through Sri Lanka, experiencing the island’s quieter corners, boutique hotels, and some of the most authentic local experiences along the way. From hilltop spa rituals to cooking with a Sri Lankan legend, here’s everything she loved — and everything we think you will too.
We began our journey inland at Santani Wellness Resort, tucked high in the hills near Kandy. It’s the kind of place where your shoulders drop about five minutes after arrival. There’s no unnecessary fuss here — the design is calm and minimalist, the vibe unhurried, and the whole resort is centred around wellbeing, movement, and proper rest. The spa is tucked into the jungle, with floor-to-ceiling views and outdoor relaxation areas that feel like a front-row seat to the wild. I lay there one afternoon, wrapped in post-massage bliss, watching monkeys swing through the trees and birds calling in the distance — it felt like a proper reset.
The food was equally special. Each meal was tailored to our wellness goals, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the kind of flavour you dream about weeks later. One of the highlights? A Sri Lankan seven-course tasting menu that celebrated spice, balance and boldness — from delicate lentil fritters to fragrant coconut curries. You can be as structured or indulgent as you like at Santani, which is exactly how a wellness retreat should feel.
From the hills, we headed south to the coast and checked in to Kumu Beach, a small, design-led hotel near Balapitiya. With only 10 rooms, it felt incredibly personal — the sort of place where staff remember your favourite drink and the sound of the ocean is your soundtrack from morning to night. There’s a long pool that stretches towards the sea, a low-key restaurant with an excellent seafood curry, and a beachfront deck made for golden hour cocktails.
It’s also big on sustainability — something we always look for — and perfect for couples or solo travellers who want a bit of boutique beachside bliss without the crowds.
We finished our trip in Galle, one of Sri Lanka’s most atmospheric coastal towns. Staying at Fort Bazaar, a stylish hotel within the old fort walls, meant we could walk straight out into the cobbled streets and explore its colourful shops, colonial buildings and little cafés. It’s got a real European feel, but with that unmistakable Sri Lankan warmth.
A true highlight was a cooking class with “Mama” Shahira — a local culinary hero with a passion for spice and stories. She welcomed us into her home, taught us how to grind, mix and balance flavours, and shared her family’s recipes with real pride. We made dahl, sambols, jackfruit curry… and somehow managed to eat it all. Easily one of the most memorable (and delicious) moments of the trip.
Sri Lanka is one of those places that stays with you — in the colours, the warmth, the food, and the stories. From jungle yoga and wellness menus to barefoot dinners by the sea, this trip had it all. And with flight times of around 11 hours and no jet lag (thank you time zones), it’s the perfect long-haul escape for anyone craving variety, adventure and a bit of slow travel.
Swords Says: Sri Lanka isn’t one-size-fits-all — and that’s the best part. We’ll tailor your trip around what matters most to you, whether that’s spa days and sleep-ins or surf breaks and street food. Just say the word.
